c.j. hayden I help my clients launch and expand ventures dedicated to social change. I work with the leaders of startup or growing social ventures to help them strategize, troubleshoot, and stay true to their vision. My approach is a blend of practical management consulting with personal mentoring and coaching. Since 1992, I have been helping clients like these:
  • A successful author wanted to use her experience in the publishing industry to found an entrepreneurial nonprofit teaching job skills to at-risk girls. I coached her to clarify her vision, define the mission of her enterprise, form her first management team, build alliances in the community, and make it all fit into her already busy life.
  • An MD who founded a medical research facility to discover new treatments for AIDS/HIV hired me to consult with his management team about appropriate marketing strategies, advise them on developing a marketing action plan, and mentor the doctor/CEO himself on entrepreneurial thinking, better delegation skills, and project management techniques.
  • The owner of a training school worked with me to begin sharing her innovative ideas about leadership and personal development on a worldwide basis. I advised her on public relations and writing techniques, and coached her on balancing her heavy workload with managing her health, nurturing a new relationship, and writing a book, while growing her school from a local success into a global enterprise.
  • A husband-wife team of psychotherapists hired me to help implement their mission to make psychological services available to areas in crisis in the developing world. I mentored them in reorganizing their private practices and finances to make a life of travel and volunteering possible.
  • The new director of a social enterprise asked me to assist with creating a sustainable business model for the venture, and a realistic action plan for her ambitious goals. I consulted with her to develop a detailed business plan, advised her about fundraising, and mentored her to build her management and communication skills.
My clients include for-profit or nonprofit social enterprises, solopreneurs engaged in social change, directors of nonprofits, and activist CEO's. I typically work with clients who are launching a new venture or expanding an existing enterprise into new territory.

* What is a social entrepreneur? If your venture has a mission to create social change, and that mission holds a higher priority for you than maximizing personal profits, you may be a social entrepreneur. Social entrepreneurship may take many forms: starting or leading a mission-driven business, founding or directing an innovative nonprofit, implementing a community initiative, serving as an activist, working to educate others through writing, teaching, speaking, or artistic works — or even launching a movement. Social entrepreneurs are innovators; their aim is to break patterns and introduce new approaches to solve social problems.

Related to social entrepreneurship are two other terms: social enterprise and social ventures. Social enterprise is the use of business methods to achieve a social mission. For example, a nonprofit organization that funds its programs by selling products or services. Or a for-profit business that directs a significant percentage of its profits to a social cause. Social venture is a broader term that applies to any organization, business, or initiative launched for the purpose of addressing social problems or creating social change.
